Tripe+Drisheen: The Friday View

A regular weekly round-up of some of the happenings in Cork city and county.

Welcome to your Friday View from Cork.

Following on from Ellie’s report on the OPW Flood Relief works in Cork city and county last week, Bandon has had emergency remedial works underway to repair the fish pass that has been preventing Salmon and other fish from migrating since flooding in February damaged the brand-new flood relief scheme.

A letter circulated to members of Bandon Angling Association informed members that the works were completed by the evening of the April 27.

But keen angler Simon Toussifar says the newly installed boulders are actually a hazard to the annual grilse run - when year-old salmon who have been to sea for the first time return on migration en masse.

A well-earned drink for Aoife Cooke via Instagram

A big congrats to Aoife Cooke from Youghal who ran the fourth fastest marathon time ever by an Irish woman to secure her place in the Tokyo Olympics. Aoife clocked 2:28:36 at the Cheshire Elite Marathon last Sunday. Next stop Sapporo, in Hokkaido where the marathon will be held later this summer. Ganbarre Aoife!

Learning Irish, speaking Irish

Following on from this week’s long read, below is a list of resources for anyone interested in relearning Irish, or speaking it in a setting outside the classroom. Thanks to John Ó Ríordáin and Cillian Brennan.

  • Conradh na Gaeilge is based in Dublin but runs courses online.

  • UCC hold Irish language classes for all levels (in person).

  • And if you want the fully immersive experience, the Gaeltacht. “This is the best one, down beyond Dingle. Staycation idea maybe?” says John.

  • Gael-Taca on Sullivan’s Quay also run Irish classes.

  • John Ó Ríordáin produces the Pod Beag, an Irish-language podcast and he also organises Sos Lóin.

  • Óró, the Irish-language choir set up by Cillian Brennan, is on a pandemic pause, but practices at Gael-Taca.

Tweet of the week:

The Disappearance of the Dwyers

Top line: Today, April 30 marks 30 years since Conor and Sheila Dwyer went missing from Fermoy.

Details: Gardaí say they are still baffled by the mystery of the Fermoy couple who vanished without a trace. The acknowledgement came as Gardaí insisted the file remains open and active into the disappearance of the pair who were well-known locally.

Despite repeated appeals; TV reconstructions; a documentary and possible sightings in Ireland, Germany and France, no trace of the couple or evidence of their fate has ever been revealed. Gardaí found no evidence to suggest the Dwyer house had been broken into; personal items such as clothes, passports and money were still in the house. However their car, a white Toyota Cressida was not found and has never been located.

Poetry in the Park

Top line: Cork City Libraries are putting poetry into three city parks.

Details: Beginning today, ‘Poetry in the Park’ will see a variety of poems written by local poets, displayed in the Regional Park Ballincollig, Tramore Valley Park, and Fitzgerald Park.

The poems will feature work by emerging and young poets, as well as more well-known poets will be updated throughout the summer.

That’s all for this week’s edition, back next week with our long read and our Friday round-up. If you have a story you think we should be covering, please email either of us at jj.odonoghue@gmail.com or emailellieobyrne@gmail.com. Slán tamall, JJ agus Ellie.
