A marathon meeting
Last Monday evening JJ jumped on YouTube to watch our city councillors in their monthly marathon session, also known as an Ordinary Meeting of Council. It started at 5:30 p.m. and lasted more than five hours. If you want to get a glimpse of how local politics works, it’s worth dropping in. One of the big talking points (or motions) last Monday was public toilets. Bottom line: we don’t have them. The executives from the City Council are also on hand to answer queries and provide updates to the councillors. Open secret here, but the power lies with the executive. The ordinary meetings, as with other meetings involving councillors give you an idea of how things work, or don’t work, or will work. But five hours?
Two exhibitions
Art galleries were amongst the institutions that reopened on Monday, after more than four months of closure under Covid-19 restrictions. This week Ellie went to see three exhibitions, The Zurich Portrait Prize and Dara McGrath: For Those That Tell No Tales, both at the Crawford, and then she popped across town to the Lavitt Gallery where she interviewed painter Tom Climent who is exhibiting “Further Shores.” Tom’s exhibition runs for one more week until May 22. Both Crawford exhibitions have a good few more weeks left to run. No need to book online to visit either galleries.
Tweet of the week:
Tramore Valley Park should become a little easier to get to without a car since Christ King on the South Douglas Road announced on Twitter they were gifting land to the council for a public footpath. In the next few years a pedestrian bridge will be built over the N22 to allow for access from Grange/Frankfield. What all this means is that the park is becoming accessible without using a car. Slowly the cart is being put behind the horse.
The People’s Archive
Historian Doireann Markham and designer Kerry Sloane want what’s in your attic! They’re looking for photos and memorabilia representing life for the ordinary people of Cork between 1913-1923 for their online archive project. They already have some fascinating photos and you can add to the project by making a submission.
Tripe+Drisheen long read
If you haven’t got to this week’s long read yet, it’s a profile of a Cork athlete: Aoife Cooke. It’s a marathon read, which is apt given that Aoife is in training for the Tokyo Olympics Marathon which will be run in Sapporo. Great story about how she eventually qualified. Good luck Aoife with the final leg of preparation.
