Cork city centre lacks neighbourhood parks. You see these a lot in other countries - a compact, simple - doesn’t have to be fancy - playground for local families. Perhaps they even have a bench, or two.
While public liability is an issue in Ireland, it would be great if some of the derelict spaces dotted around the city could be transformed into local playgrounds, making the city more liveable, and helping people meet, mingle and play.
As of 2016 the city centre population stood at 24,399; just over 11% of the total population of Cork city. Between 2011-2016 the city centre population grew 5% and it’s projected to increase further.
As Jude Sherry, a designer (seeJude’s tweet and poll below) in Cork says, “it’s time to reimagine our public spaces”.
Jude writes: there is 250k available to every council for reimagining public spaces to host cultural activities. The fund is for “capital projects for outdoor spaces which are flexible, innovative & facilitate year-round use".
Such as a playground. Any potential sites or spots you have in mind? Feel free to add below in comments section.
The derilict warehouses and the area behind them on Old Market Place on Blarney Street would be a good candidate for a neighbourhood park I think. that area is very poorly served for outdoor spaces.
