Very well written piece, Ciarán, with a bit of wit thrown in with the wisdom. I'd like to see the approach to transport and development described in the increase in numbers (where are these people coming from, by the way, given that the population increase in Ireland would need to be at around 7pc - I'm guessing - for this kind of expansion to come from within the island?) to be county-wide, and to include a recognition of the impact on the surrounding countryside, pressure to produce food, pressure on 'beauty spots', etc. Perhaps I'll have a shot at writing something on this myself - if so, thanks for the inspiration!

Thank you for the kind words - a lot of government strategies recently have put focus on decentralizing a lot of focus away from Dublin and onto secondary cities (including Cork) - such as development of Munster Technological University, for one. Part of the intent is that if there are adequate services, people will move to Cork instead of Dublin, or likewise feel that they don’t have to move away from Cork - plus there’ll be inward immigration as well to make up the numbers. A lot of areas have been zoned for development, likely to provide increased housing - not to mention that there has been a small bit steady trickle of housing projects in the city center too. Nonetheless - a lot of ground to cover in a lot of areas, made all the easier if work starts ASAP.

Do write something about it, there’s a lot of varying perspectives on the future of Cork out there, and I’m sure you’ll come up with something interesting!

By all means Lucy do. That's the intention with Our Cork 2040: to get more voices from across the country writing and thinking about the big and small issues.
