This week, Cllr Oliver Moran attended the launch of the preferred route for the Cork Luas. He examines what light rail could bring to the city, and what else is badly needed connect the transport dots.
Fun fact: Cork used to have about 6 city centre train stations and an extensive commuter rail network about 100 years ago. I don't know how or why they managed to completely mess it up. No use crying over spilled milk I suppose.
Oliver mentions a few items in the piece that don't give me confidence that anything significant will be achieved with Cork's public transport and infrastructure.
The Pana ban, McCurtain Street parking, BusConnects and Apple's recognition of reality.
I do hope to see Cork have a Luas, but doubt very much our present institutional arrangements will deliver it.
Luas for Cork is certainly something to be celebrated as a first step in a more comprehensive transport plan for the city and, who knows, even the wider area. If we dream hard enough the railway might return to West Cork! Journey times from the park and ride to the city centre will be one of the key success measures but what Mr Moran did not consider is that parking in the City centre is overpriced so would travellers consider adding 5-10 minutes to their journey time in exchange for saving €25 - €30 on parking? Obviously the link from South to North / airport to Kent Station has to be prioritised in double quick time as well.

Another launch on this long saga.

Interesting take from the states. Colour me sceptical about 25 mins from Ballincollig to Cork getting anyone out of their car.
