Tripe+Drisheen: The Friday View 30/07
Our weekly round-up from around the city, county...and Tokyo
What a win! One week and three medals for Cork. Massive congratulations to all the athletes. They’ll have to add a verse to Skibbereen, the song, about returning with medals galore.
It’s still very odd seeing (and hearing) the empty venues in Tokyo and across Japan. Even odder when you consider that outside of Olympic events, crowds are allowed in venues, but at a reduced capacity. I spoke with a few friends in Tokyo this week, and all of them would have preferred if the Games were cancelled. New covid cases are at there highest in Tokyo since the pandemic began; those I spoke with felt that now is just not the time to hold an event of the Olympics’ scale. I suppose it would be similar to our situation during the first or third lockdown in Ireland were we asked to stage a massive global event in Cork or Dublin: there would have been massive pushback.
Alas, the games will (must?) go on, and there will be more tears of joy and sorrow.
Tweet of the week:
Craft
Cork Craft Month kicks off this weekend and continues throughout the month of August. If you’re headed to West Cork (for rowing, or non rowing-related activities), there’s a great exhibition in Ballydehob at the Working Artist Studios on Main Street as part of Craft Month. Titled Baile/Home the exhibition will explore how our relationship with the place where we have literally been cooped up at for long periods of the past 18 months. There’s a range of online and in real life craft events with the full listings on the Cork Craft website.
Triskel, outside
This week the Triskel commenced its program of concerts and comedy in its courtyard (which spills out to South Main Street). Great line-up including uileann piper David Power, comedian David McSavage and musician and composer Mike Hanrahan who’s back with Stockton’s Wing. Cork comedian Chris Kent takes to the courtyard tonight (July 30) for two shows and returns the first weekend in August. For the full line-up and availability of tickets check the Triskel website.
This week’s long read was a profile of Gavin Dunne who has been making music in Cork for two decades now. Ellie put me in touch with Gavin, they’re old school friends. He’s massively talented and a lovely guy. Incidentally, he’s releasing his first sea shanty today.
Anne Marie Cronin Photography opens her photography gallery today (July 30) in Castletownbere. It’s located in the West End. Best of luck with the new venture.
“If the sun is out it is shining in Shalom park”
This week Mick O’Sullivan has been posting the results of a comprehensive survey of Cork city’s green spaces. The survey was conducted earlier this year by Mick and a group of volunteers who really got into the weeds, so to speak. Mighty work by all especially Mick (see tweet below); we’ll catch up soon with Mick on Tripe+Drisheen for more on that project.
Right, that’s nearly it for this week, and for July. Any tips, news or events you’d like to share with Tripe+Drisheen, you can contact either of us at jj.odonoghue@gmail.com or emailellieobyrne@gmail.com. We are always happy to speak to people off the record in the first instance, and we will treat your information with confidence and sensitivity. Get in touch.
Have a lovely bank holiday weekend and back with another instalment of Our Cork 2040 on Sunday. Make sure you check this one out.
