Rebels Abú! + The Friday View 19/07
🔴⚪️With the countdown on to Cork v Clare in Croke Park, Cork fans share their thoughts on the Championship to date, our chances on Sunday, and the hunt for tickets! Plus Out+About in Cork city.
Hello and welcome to a special edition of the Friday View!
Walking around Cork city this week, there were nearly as many Cork flags as there were Spanish students. Ahead of the All-Ireland this Sunday, and the long wait to recapture the Liam McCarthy Cup (19 years!), we caught up with some Cork fans, old and young, in Cork and not Cork, to read the tea leaves.
It’s been an incredible Championship and the team have provided some incredible memories en route to the final. Let’s hope it’s a good one. Good luck to all heading to Croke Park (and still hunting for tickets – see below). All that remains to say is… Corcaigh abú!
Kate Smith, Camogie player with the Rockies
What’s your name and where are you from?
My name is Kate Smith, I’m from Blackrock.
Where will you be watching the game?
Hopefully I can get tickets for the match, if not I will be heading to Blackrock hurling club as there will be a great atmosphere, due to there being Blackrock players and coaching staff on the panel.
What’s it been like following Cork this season?
This season has been a rollercoaster of emotions, from thinking we were going to get knocked out of the Munster championship after the Waterford game, to being at Croke Park watching them beat Limerick, not for the first time but the second it was an amazing journey to be part of.
What do you think of our chances?
I think it will be a tough match, they have great players, the likes of Shane O’Donnell, Tony Kelly and Peter Duggan, who will be hard to keep quiet in a match, but this is the first time that Cork have been going into the All Ireland as a favorite in a long time. We look to be in great form after the semifinal against Limerick so I think we have a great chance of bringing Liam McCarthy back to Cork. Cork should have a chip on their shoulder from losing to Clare in the 2013 All Ireland final and that should drive them on to win this one. Rebels Abú!
What’s your name and where are you from?
I’m Donal Óg Crowley and I’m from Castlemartyr in East Cork.
Where will you be watching the game?
Hopefully, I’ll be watching the match in Croke Park hopefully, but if not in the fan zone down the Páirc.
What’s it been like following Cork this season?
It has been a roller coaster.
What do you think of our chances?
I think we have a good enough chance of winning. Up the Rebels!
Rowan Meegan, resident DJ at the Old Oak, Crawford & Co and Murphy’s Rock
Who are you are where are you from?
My name is Rowan Meegan, I'm a Cork City based DJ from the Northside of the city but in recent years I've been living in the city centre for the bones of 10 years now.
Where will you be watching the match?
Currently I don't know. Like everyone else I'm on the hunt for a ticket so depending on how much luck I can muster I'll either be in the thick of it in Croke Park or alternatively biting my nails at Coughlan’s Bar on Douglas Street. Either way I'm looking forward to what will hopefully be a great Sunday afternoon.
What's it been like following Cork this season?
For me personally it's never easy following the Cork hurlers. Ever since I was introduced to inter-county hurling by my Dad in 1999, the Cork senior team have always had a strangle hold on my emotions. They're the only thing on this planet that can make me feel pure emotion, on either end of the spectrum, in an instant, so my best, honest answer to that question is up, down and side to side.
What do you think of our chances?
Like any sporting event that ultimately ends with two teams, our chances are good of course. Cork overcoming a team going for five in a row (twice) and proving themselves as consistent goal scorers with a never-say-die attitude and hunger to succeed, leads me to believe that the match on Sunday will be a close battle between two deserving teams but I'm sorry Clare, the Rebel county miss Liam and it's about time he came home for a while.
Pádraig Manning, Vice Consul, Consulate General of Ireland in Chicago
Who are you are where are you from?
I’m Pádraig Manning - I’m originally from Glanmire but I’m currently living in Chicago and working in the Consulate General of Ireland to the Midwest USA.
Where will you be watching the match?
There are so many great bars in Chicago to watch sports, so I’m spoiled for choice. I plan to watch the match on Sunday in the Kerryman in downtown Chicago with some friends from Cork.
What's it been like following Cork this season?
Because of the time difference, I often start my days at the weekends by watching sport back home and GAAGo makes this infinitely easier (sorry to those who disagree). Following the Cork hurlers has been great - despite a few nerves earlier in the year.
What do you think of our chances?
Last time Cork won, I was in Croke Park and I was only nine years old! I'm no expert though, and haven't seen much of Clare, so wouldn't know too much about their chances. All I know is that I want Cork to end the drought. Corcaigh Abú!
Who are you, where are you from in Cork and where do you live now?
Is mise John Ó Ríordáin and I'm from Millstreet, Co. Cork ó dhúchas but I'm living in the Glen Rovers heartland of Ballyvolane now. So between Mark Ellis, Stephen McDonnell, the Downeys and Hoggy my home club of Millstreet and my kids club of Glen Rovers have been well represented in the Championship in recent years.
Where will you be watching the match?
I'm not even entertaining trying to get a ticket for the final. I know of a Cork club who got allocated 52 tickets and had 1,480 applications. Tá súil agam that the City Council and Cork GAA can set up fan zones so that my family can watch it down town with thousands of other Cork fans. Maybe putting a few screens in Páirc Uí Chaoimh might be a possibility even? The atmosphere would be fantastic and some memory for my two young (5 and 7 years old) kids! If not then we will probably watch it at home with a couple of friends.
What's it been like following Cork this season?
Bhí sé go hiontach! My daughter vaguely remembers success in Munster campaigns when she was younger. But my five-year-old son has really been swept up in it this year. Bhíomar ag cúpla cluiche agus we were lucky enough to get tickets for the semi-final last weekend. My son still refuses to leave the house without wearing eadaí dearga!
Bhí tús lag againn i mbliana which set our expectations quite low, so every victory has been unexpected and therefore sweeter. Go háirithe i gcoinne na seaimpíní, Luimneach.
What do you think of our chances?
Sinne Corcaigh! We are Cork! So we have a great chance. We've beaten the Champions (twice), we've a team that seems hungry with a high work rate, and we've players who support each other. Pat Ryan, and his team, seem to have got the players heads right and so there is little I'd be worried about if we can put that together on the big day again. Níl ach cluiche amháin eile againn! Corcaigh Abú!
Who are you, where are you from in Cork and where do you live now?
My name is Shane Garrett. I’m originally from Douglas but living in Canberra, Australia.
Where will you be watching the match?
The game starts at half past midnight over here. Unfortunately, Canberra is not known for its range of Sunday nightlife options so it looks like a home game for me! It can get bitterly cold here at night this time of year so a night in mightn’t be all that bad.
What's it been like following Cork this season?
In terms of catching the games live, I haven’t been the most loyal supporter this year. Like many, I thought it was all over after the second Munster defeat in May. I was blown away by the Limerick and Tipperary performances, as if a long awaited penny had dropped spectacularly.
What do you think of our chances?
The odds are tight, and I’d much rather that than have Cork as hot favourites. On a good day, they can clearly beat anyone. But it’s going to be tight - and tense. And a great day for all those lucky enough to have a ticket.
Who are you, where are you from in Cork and where do you live now?
I’m Emmett O’Shaughnessy from Massachusetts originally but living in Douglas.
Where will you be watching the match?
We’ll be up in Dublin for the match and hoping to get tickets for it.
What's it been like following Cork this season?
Following Cork this year has been amazing. It’s been like driving a car that’s almost out of petrol but in the distance you can see the petrol station and you find a way to get there, fill up and continue the journey.
What do you think of our chances?
I fancy Cork’s chances. I think with the way they’ve been playing and with the support from Cork fans they are set up for success.
Who are you, where are you from in Cork and where do you live now?
Brian O’Loughlin, from Douglas in Cork
Where will you be watching the match?
Hopefully in Croke Park.
What's it been like following Cork this season?
Fantastic, despite initial concerns. Since the Tipperary match last year there seems to have been something big coming. The night against Limerick in the Páirc has to be the greatest sporting event in the world this year. The storyline coming into it, the way the match ebbed and flowed. The pressure. The incredible climax, the spectacle, then Shane Kingston's audacious and courageous run through the Limerick team. He rounded seven of them, knocked over another nine, and it took five more to drag him down. Unless the Olympics has some ridiculous story I can't see anything to compare.
What do you think of our chances?
Good chance, concerned about the power in the Clare full back line but sure no doubt the team will have a cut.
