MTU's missing trees, take a walk on the pontoon in Midleton and laugh it off ar Sheachtain na Gaeilge
A missing trees update
A reader alerted Tripe + Drisheen to a number of recently felled trees on the campus of Munster Technological University at the entrance on Rossa Avenue. The stumps of the Oak trees still stand where the crop of trees grew until recently (see picture).
Tripe + Drisheen contacted MTU for details about the trees and why they were felled. We were told that between 30 and 40 “early mature Oaks trees” were felled “to make way for the new LRC building which is due to start on site August/September 2022.”
Tree felling was granted as part of planning permission for the new building and the trees were knocked last month as “tree felling is prohibited from March 1 to August 31.”
MTU spent “around €6,000” felling and removing the trees.
Asked if trees will be planted to replace the ones that were knocked, the college said new trees will be planted around the new campus building which is expected to be completed towards the end of 2024. In 2020, 100 trees were planted along the edges of MTU’s sports fields and the college plans to plant 1000 trees by 2024.
Separately, Tripe + Drisheen have been in touch with the new trees officer appointed by Cork City Council late last year and we will be interviewing him in due course.
Image of the week
Via the archive of Anthony Barry. The location here would be well known to many; it’s the junction of Paul Street, Castle Street and Daunt's Square with the Round House pub in the centre foreground. It’s the Roundy now, but still a great shot. Taken from the Anthony Barry archive.
This week on T+D
Understandably, war in Ukraine is dominating news: in the space of a week more than one million refugees have fled Ukraine, some of whom will make their way to Cork, quite possibly to join family members here. This week JJ talked with Vadym Horobets, from Odessa and living in Bishopstown, about how the war has impacted him and his family.
On Thursday, March 3, church bells rang out in unison across the city and county at 7 p.m. to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
Our regular long read was with a Russian student living in Cork. As with Vadym she spoke frankly about her emotions: the shock, the horror, and, in Anna’s case the guilt. It’s not her war, but it’s being fought in her country’s name. What unites both interviews is the humanity and sympathy that Vadym and Anna express. You can read both pieces below:
Earlier in the week Ellie caught up with Michael O'Riordan who’s not only busy on Twitter but also in real life. He’s taken it upon himself to give some TLC to a neglected on the Northside.
